million vs billion vs trillion –

What is the difference between million, billion, trillion …

The above foreign words always confuse us. Words like million, billion are used more in financial and ecomonic stuffs. When we see or hear these words together, there is less clarity and more confusion.

Whether it is about the number of stars in the sky, the wealth of a big businessman, or GDP , these words are often used. Let’s understand what these words mean exactly and what is the difference between them.

The three words million, billion, trillion represent three different numbers –

one million1 million (10,00,000)
one billion100 crores (100,00,00,000)
one trillion1 Lakh Crore (10,00,00,00,00,000)

‘One million’ does not mean 10 lakh rupees, it is just a number. But when we say ‘one million rupees’, it means ’10 lakh rupees ‘. Just using words like million and billion, they do not mean money/rupees, but just a number.

Example –

For example, there are one million cars in the state. That means there are 1 million cars in the state.
For example, there are 1 billion cells in our body. That means there are 1 billion cells in our body.
Also, there are 1 trillion stars/moons in the sky. That means there are 1 lakh crore stars in the sky.

These are just a few examples to help you understand. In reality, there are more than 1 billion cells in our body, more than 1 trillion stars in the sky…

That is, there is a 1000-fold difference between 1 million and 1 billion. Similarly, there is a 1000-fold difference between 1 billion and 1 trillion.

  • E.g. 31.5 million seconds is ≈1 year and 1 billion seconds is 31.7 years!

Million, billion, trillion …

We saw that these are different numbers and also saw the difference between them. The real confusion comes when we use them in the context of money .

When we exchange the currency of one country for the currency of another country, there is an “exchange rate.” The value of one country’s currency may be lower or higher than the currency of another country.

For example, the value of the US dollar is higher than the Indian rupee in the international market. Therefore, the value of 1 million US dollars ( 10 lakh US dollars ) is higher than 1 million Indian rupees ( 10 lakh rupees ).

  • One million US Dollars = 10 Lakh US Dollars
  • Also one million Indian rupees = 10 lakh Indian rupees

However,One million US dollars is not 10 lakh Indian rupees. Because these are two different currencies, the exchange rate between the currencies of the two countries is multiplied and then the value of that currency can be determined.

1 US Dollar = 87 Indian Rupees [August, 2025] … Considering this exchange rate, let us look at some examples.

For example-

  1. 5 US Dollars = 5 Indian Rupees x 87 i.e. 435 Rupees
  2. 1 million US dollars = 1 million Indian rupees x 87 i.e. 8,70,00,000 (8 crore 70 lakh rupees)
  3. 1 billion US dollars = 1 billion Indian rupees x 87 i.e. 8 thousand seven hundred crore rupees (87000000000)
